While GTA 6’s delay was long foreseen and disappointed fans, Rockstar made up with a brand-new trailer and a whopping 177 screenshots on the game’s entirely redone website.
Now, its parent company, Take-Two, just wrapped up its earnings for the past fiscal year. The latest report reveals that GTA 6 began development in 2020 after the massive success of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Why it matters: GTA 5 was first released in 2013, and fans had long expected Rockstar to begin development on the next entry soon after. However, nobody expected the publisher to take such a long break before returning to the franchise.
Take-Two’s latest financial report mentioned that development ‘in earnest’ began in 2020, but the pre-production and pitching phase likely started before that. Red Dead Redemption 2 was released in 2020, and Rockstar probably immediately began working on GTA 6 afterward.
Still, it’s impressive the level of detail Rockstar was able to achieve with GTA 6 just five years into its development.
Furthermore, Take-Two revealed that GTA 6 is the most complicated project they’ve worked on and that the final release will exceed all expectations.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick also spoke with IGN about GTA 6’s delay. Contrary to reports, the boss says they don’t expect any further delay.
I think historically when we set a specific date, generally speaking, we’ve been very good about reaching it.
Previously, the release window was simply set for Fall 2025, and the final release date wasn’t confirmed. However, with Rockstar finally setting the launch date for May 26, 2026, they’re confident they’ll reach that window.
He also said that the game needed more polishing and that the small increment of time needed in development was for GTA 6 to “achieve its creative vision with no limitations.”
